The protein encoded by the echinoderm microtubule associated protein-like 4 (EML4) gene is involved in microtubule formation and stabilisation¹.

A novel gene fusion of EML4 and Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) was recently identified in Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

The EML4-ALK fusion was shown to result from an inversion within chromosome 2p, inv(2)(p21p23), and was detected in approximately 7% of NSCLC cases^2,3.
